Let's Meet the 5th Grade Teachers
Bio: This is my 30th year of teaching, and I have loved all of them! I spent many years teaching first and second grade, as well as elementary science. Two years ago my husband and I moved to Vancouver, and I began teaching at Laurin. It was the best decision I’ve ever made! This is a fantastic community of learners and teachers. I spent this summer walking with my granddaughter so my son could work from home. I also walked my one year old yellow lab, Tillamook every day. My husband and I are working to convert a garage on our property into an art studio, so I try to spend some time on it every day as well. My 2 adult children are married and living in Portland. This year I’ll be team teaching with Mr. Tugaw. He will teach ELA and history. I’ll be teaching math and science. I am looking forward to meeting all of you!
Student Teacher: Madison Epperly
Bio: I have had the joy of working with children since I was in middle school. I have taught fifth grade for 20 years. Seventeen of those years, here at Laurin. My high school son and middle school daughter keep my husband and I busy with their activities of dance, sewing, scouts, and robotics, just to name a few. In our free time we enjoy riding bikes, walking, baking, and spending time with friends. I can't think of anything else I would do, but teach. Children make me laugh and think constantly.
Bio: I have the pleasure of this being my 5th year teaching at Laurin, and my 8th year with BGPS. I've taught all subjects, but am focusing on ELA and Math this year; Ms. Sawdye is my teaching partner. I love being involved with the kiddos, and in the past, I have worked as yearbook advisor, and PBIS lead, as well as with after school programs including the sewing club and math club. Outside of school, I enjoy reading, gardening, writing, traveling with my family, raising chickens, and playing with my dogs. I am blessed to be a part of the Laurin family, and to work with such amazing students, staff, and families. We're going to have a great year!
Bio: I’m a graduate of Eastern Washington University. I spent the years after college trying my hand at many different jobs. Several years ago I decided I wanted to work in education. Here at Laurin Middle School, I teach fifth-grade English Language Arts and History. I enjoy helping fifth-graders learn to be independent and succeed. When I’m not working, I enjoying reading, cooking, exploring the outdoors, working in the yard, and spending time with my wife and our one-year-old son.
Bio: I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Sociology and a Masters of Education from Portland State University in 2017. That same year I became a member of the fantastic team at Laurin Middle School and have been teaching 5th grade ever since. I love teaching and I especially love working with the students and staff at LMS. When I’m not teaching, I enjoy hanging out with my family, spending time with my dog Nessie, reading, cooking, baking and traveling. I love everything Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Jurassic Park and SCI-FI! This year is going to be like no other year but as long as we stay positive, support each other, and spread kindness it will be a great year!
Bio: I have been teaching 5th grade at Laurin for almost 20 years now! I love this school, and it’s our students and their families that make it such an incredible place. Connecting current learning to future success is my favorite part of teaching, and seeing my students grow into successful adults is awesome! I love teaching and seeing students learn Math, as it’s incredible to observe how they decide to solve problems and attack challenges. When not teaching, I love playing outside with my wife, our three children, and our trouble-making boxer dog Princess Buttercup. Cooking and eating also hold a great deal of interest to me, and I love to try foods from around the world. When on the island of Santorini, a local islander pointed at me and said “Greek!” and I decided it must be true, so I enjoy cooking Greek food in particular.
